Liza Lou's "Painting"
We the People is the name of a show my summer students and I saw at the Albright-Knox in Buffalo. It was comprised of recent additions to their collection that commented on the issue of identity.
Liza Lou’s Carbon/Solid (2012-14) looks like a black monochromatic painting, but upon closer inspection we see that it is composed of thousands of glass beads woven together. The artist received an award that allowed her to move her studio to South Africa which allowed her a new appreciation of beadwork based on regional traditions of the Zulu, Xhosa, and Ndebele people. This detail of Carbon/Solid is taken from LizaLou.com.
