In the Studio

In the Studio is the title of my online course on modern and contemporary painting. I am teaching this course in the fall semester to those in the Alfred-Dusseldorf MFA program. The coming semester, I have redesigned it for sophomores and upper-division students. We will be focusing on facture—the process and materiality of painting—from Paul Cézanne to Amy Sillman. Along the way, we will look at certain aspects of painting practice, such as finish, deformation, style, narrative. Students will do papers that will map the current field and navigate their own practice. I am adding an image of an Amy Sillman canvas here.
